Day trips

LUDLOW - Ludlow is a town just over the border with plenty of offerings for a day out.  It boasts a wonderful castle (where Prince Arthur died, ushering in the age of Henry VIII), the church of St Laurence’s (also known as the Cathedral of the Marches) which has some outstanding medieval misericords among much much more.  The independent shops are out of this world, with the award winning Broad Bean Deli being one of our highlights. The food is also excellent (as it should be in a town with such a foodie reputation!).  We love CSONS, down by the river and Dinham bridge. Their cinnamon rolls are out of this world, the lunchtime offerings are seasonal and imaginative, and you can spend a lovely relaxing time spotting kingfishers on the river (along with lots and lots of wild swimmers if it’s a nice day!)

Hay-On-Wye - hugely busy during the week of the eponymous festival, but worth a visit any time for their enormous array of second hand bookshops and lovely little cafes.  Hay is a lovely town which, like Ludlow, boasts a super castle which is worth a visit (amongst all the book shops).  You’ll want to set aside a good half a day to explore the bookshops, though. They really are amazing.  We love Booth’s, which has a lovely cafe and a cinema amongst all the literary treasures!

Llanarthne - we love a day trip over to Llanarthne for several reasons.  Firstly, the drive over there is out of this world. It's a lovely road, set in scenery which is the perfect blend of Wales and England - castles on hill-tops, a beautiful river, free roaming sheep….it’s just impossibly romantic. Next - it gives you a chance to visit the Golden Grove Estate, which has a very nice stately home but (even better in our book) an arboretum and a glass house.  It’s also very close to the National Botanic Garden of Wales which is well worth a visit (and could be a day trip all of its own!)  Finally, when you reach Llanarthney, you can visit Wrights, which is an AMAZING deli/shop/cafe where we could while away hours!  It has some unique and very tasty offerings.

If you don’t feel like going to Llanarthne, but still want some good food and a pretty market town, why not try Llandilo which is a little closer but just as nice. It has a little market on Friday mornings.
