Indulgence of real blue sky thinking
Eighty acres of moor and mountain, forest and river to call your own. Two miles from the nearest road. Mobile reception? Blissfully patchy. Unplug from urban life with off-grid glamping at one of our four pods in the Cambrian Mountains of mid Wales.
David Devoy, the Chillderness dream builder, takes you on a tour around glamping at Red Kite Estate, mid Wales
Roughing it in style in your off-grid wilderness glamping pod
Swing axes, build fires, fill the wood-fired bathtubs from your private stretch of river and marvel at the Milky Way. Glamping at Red Kite Estate gives you space for wilderness exploration, without the hair shirt.
No electricity but not short on comfort: comfy double bed with proper mattress, wood-burning stove to keep your toes toasty even in winter, kitted out outdoor kitchen and dining room.
PS: she said yes! – Tommy and Natalie, staying at Earth Conker
“The moment I arrived I knew leaving would be hard”
– Andrea, staying at Dragon’s Egg Tree Tent
“Magical! Just plain magical. It was exactly the disconnected getaway we needed. The creek is a beautiful natural white noise machine that looks like it’s right out of a dream. You could set your clock by the sheep coming and going. The moment I arrived I knew leaving would be hard.”
Food from the fire always tastes better — facts
All four glamping pods on Red Kite Estate come with their own well-equipped outdoor kitchens. The Tree Tents come with kitchens in the canopy and fire pits by the river. There are heated showers on the deck. The two Conkers are the place for foodies and those in search of zen – both are equipped with a wood-fired pizza oven, outdoor baths and fire pit. Red Kite Moon Conker is ultra off grid featuring the Pentagon outdoor kitchen/dining room with brazier, while Red Kite Earth Conker has a small yet perfectly formed indoor kitchen.
“The scenery was breathtaking. There is a quirky outside metal bath, that you have to light a fire to get it hot enough. Took us four hours using wood provided, by which time we ran out of wine... take extra wine! Was worth the wait, as very novel having a bath with a raging fire under it.”
“Words can’t describe how much we have enjoyed our few nights here. Complete switch off and escape from reality! Beautiful baths overlooking the valley. Amazing walks and great pizza.”
Slow down and get closer to nature

Freud would have something to say about our obsession with spheres. Our first foray into glamping was the launch of the Tree Tents, another world first. Ynys Affalon and the Dragon’s Egg are insulated orbs which owe more to high-tech aviation design than your typical festival tent. Appearing in season 1 of Amazing Spaces, George Clarke loved them and we are sure you will too.
“Thanks for an amazing stay. We felt like Tarzan and Jane up in the trees.”
“The egg is a very unique experience, and once we got our ‘egg legs’ it was easy to navigate. Don’t bring much so you can enjoy the space fully, but then again, you won’t need much: there’s books and playing cards and nature to occupy you.”
